Lessons from lockdown

Last year was a year to remember but soon enough want to forget. Every person in some way has had to adjust the way they work. Being both physically and mentally distanced, our workflows were revised, tools changed and the working day may not look the same for a long time to come. But as we embark on the new year, I wanted to look at some challenges we faced and how lessons learned could make for a better 2021.

Collaboration

Working in isolation is something that can come naturally to some designers, late nights working away trying to crack a brief to life as a freelancer. I myself am often guilty of trying to go it alone. But if 2020 has taught me anything it’s just how important collaboration is and how sometimes we take it for granted. While it may not be essential, and in some cases may not be easy, collaborating can offer different perspectives and spur inspiration that can lead to even greater outcomes unattainable by working alone.

Invest in people over apps

Running a business can be hard and expensive. While their are many great apps to help you run your business. Sure apps are convenient, but in many cases only offer a short solution or means to get up and running rather than a substitute for the real thing. There are some problems that can’t be solved by a FAQ page. A great accountant will always be better than Xero.

It's personal

The phrase it’s not personal it’s business can only get you so far in this world. Businesses survive and flourish through personal relationships and community. During COVID many businesses were able to survive because things got personal. The community showing up and shopping local, supporting the brands and companies they love and have a genuine connection with. Building personal connections through business will not only make work more enjoyable but also help to weather future storms.
